We are pleased to present our comprehensive inventory of hot rolled 304 and 304L stainless steel sheets and plates with NO.1 mill finish, available in thicknesses from 3mm to 60mm. Engineered for demanding construction, building, and industrial applications, these austenitic stainless steel products deliver exceptional corrosion resistance, high-temperature performance, and outstanding fabrication characteristics.
304 stainless steel, also known as 18/8 stainless steel in the industry, contains 18-20% chromium and 8-10% nickel with a density of 7.93 g/cm³. It withstands continuous service temperatures up to 800°C and offers excellent processing performance and high toughness. Widely used across industrial machinery, furniture decoration, food processing, and medical equipment industries, 304 stainless steel remains the most versatile and widely specified austenitic grade worldwide.
It is important to note that food-grade 304 stainless steel has stricter composition requirements than standard 304. While the international definition specifies 18-20% chromium and 8-10% nickel, food-grade 304 mandates tighter controls on heavy metal content, ensuring safe direct food contact. Not all 304 stainless steel automatically qualifies as food-grade.
| Property | 304 Stainless Steel | 304L Stainless Steel |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon Content | ≤0.08% | ≤0.03% |
| Corrosion Resistance | Excellent (general conditions) | Superior after welding (resists intergranular corrosion) |
| Weld Suitability | Good; may require post-weld treatment | Excellent; lower carbide precipitation in HAZ |
| Hardness | Slightly higher (higher carbon) | Slightly lower (lower carbon) |
| Price | Standard pricing | Premium (5-10% higher) |
| Best Application | General fabrication, non-welded structures | Welded assemblies, chemical tanks, long-service structures |
The lower carbon content of 304L stainless steel (≤0.03%) significantly reduces carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone during welding, effectively improving intergranular corrosion resistance and extending the service life of welded joints. For welded construction and building components, 304L is strongly recommended.
